Provisional: Google News was rate-limiting us (every request failed), so all 13 outlets were checked through Bing News only. AP, Reuters and CBS News block direct site search, and the other 10 outlets’ site search only loads in a live browser. A single search engine can miss articles, so this score may go down on recheck. Some matches were confirmed from headline, date and URL because the outlet blocked us from opening them.

Depth

Dig five layers into this story — from what happened to the full picture.

L1What happened

On the night of Nov. 1, a dump truck loaded with explosive cylinders detonated in the Aeropuerto neighborhood of Planadas, near the 17th Infantry Battalion "General Domingo Caicedo" (Caracol). Drones carrying explosives were also reported (Caracol; UPI), and Mayor Juan Camilo Hueje said drones were flying over the town (DW). Preliminary toll: four dead, including a 2-month-old girl, and 17 injured, per the hospital report (Caracol; Semana); La FM reported about 15 injured. Caracol said other bodies were awaiting identification by Medicina Legal, so the toll may rise.

L2Who’s affected

Civilians in the Aeropuerto neighborhood; La FM reported damage up to three blocks away, and Semana reported 170 homes affected. Gov. Adriana Magali Matiz told La FM the hospital was 80% destroyed. The wounded were treated at the Santo Domingo Savio school (Caracol). The mayor decreed a curfew, and the CEATI health centre was evacuated (Caracol).

L3Why it’s quiet

Analysis · OVERLOOKED It happened in a remote mountain municipality in southern Tolima, and most detailed coverage is in Spanish-language Colombian media. BBC and UPI carried it in English.

L4Deeper impact

Matiz said the attack was aimed at the military unit but went off early (La FM); Semana's military sources say the same is being checked. Portafolio counts four attacks attributed to dissidents in Cauca, Huila and Tolima over the weekend, with five dead and at least 12 injured, and reports the governor asked for three municipalities to be militarized. The army commander, Maj. Gen. José Bertulfo Soto Sánchez, ordered stepped-up operations and two platoons were sent (El Tiempo; Semana).

L5Full context

Attribution is preliminary. El Tiempo and Semana point to the Gerónimo Galeano structure of the dissidents led by alias Iván Mordisco; UPI says regional authorities named the Ismael Ruiz Front, a faction of the main former-FARC dissident bloc. BBC says armed groups have stepped up attacks amid an offensive by President Abelardo de la Espriella. The 2016 peace deal with the FARC ended decades of conflict, but its implementation is slow (DW). On Oct. 28, Matiz warned that four people had been killed in three days in southern Tolima, with preliminary reports pointing to illegal mining in Ataco and Chaparral (El Tiempo).
