Depth

Dig five layers into this story — from what happened to the full picture.

L1What happened

CariCOF expects unusually low frequency of showers, wet spells and excessive rainfall, except in the far northwest of the region. Unseasonably high temperatures for the cool season are very likely, though there could be fewer episodes of excessive heat. It says the high potential for flooding, flash floods and cascading hazards remains across the region, with the possible exception of the ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao) and French Guiana (Observer/CMC).

L2Who’s affected

Long-term drought might develop or continue by the end of November in Grand Cayman, Grenada, Martinique, St Vincent and Tobago. Agricultural drought is evolving in northern Belize, Dominica and Martinique, and might develop or continue in Antigua, eastern Jamaica, St Lucia, St Vincent and Tobago (Observer/CMC).

L3Why it’s quiet

Analysis · OVERLOOKED Seasonal climate outlooks for small island states rarely reach U.S. outlets. The coverage we found was CMC copy in Caribbean papers.

L4Deeper impact

Dusty Saharan air intrusions, though not frequent in this season, can temporarily make heat worse, degrade air quality and suppress intense showers (Observer/CMC).

L5Full context

CariCOF's earlier August update to its drought outlook had already said a short-term drought emergency should be considered for Dominica. It said drought warnings should be considered for places including the ABC Islands, Antigua, Saint Lucia, Tobago, northeast Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands (CariCOF). The Observer's sentence on where short-term drought had developed as of Oct. 1 is garbled, so we do not use it.
