Depth

Dig five layers into this story — from what happened to the full picture.

L1What happened

Most cases are in southwest Iowa, with others in the northeastern, central, southeastern and eastern parts of the state, and most were locally acquired (WHO 13). Iowa HHS says it and local public health partners are "responding to a measles outbreak affecting multiple counties." Its case-count table, which it updates weekly on Thursdays, was last updated Oct. 29. The count itself did not load in our snapshot, so the figure of 42 comes from the two news reports.

L2Who’s affected

Vaccination status, as each source puts it: WHO 13 says "40 were unvaccinated, or their vaccination status was unknown, HHS said"; Western Iowa Today says "Of the 42 people infected this year, 40 were unvaccinated." Iowa HHS: "It is routine for children to be vaccinated against measles at 12 months and 4 years of age. Those who have not had these two doses of vaccine are at risk for measles."

L4Deeper impact

Measles can cause pneumonia and brain inflammation (Western Iowa Today). Iowa HHS says two MMR doses are about 97% effective, and vaccine given to unvaccinated people within 72 hours of exposure can prevent the disease or make it less severe. Anyone with symptoms or a possible exposure should call a provider before arriving. No exposure locations have been identified in the last four weeks (WHO 13, citing the HHS website).

L5Full context

Before Aug. 16, 2026, Iowa had identified one measles case this year, and 9 cases in 2025 (Iowa HHS). Measles vaccine is required for entry to Iowa public and private schools and licensed child care centers and preschools (Iowa HHS).
