L1What happened

The group of nine set off July 30 on "a routine one-hour crossing between the islands of Murilo and Ruo" in the Federated States of Micronesia and were caught in a storm. On Sunday, villagers on Fanning Island in Kiribati spotted the drifting boat and rescued the five on board (ABC News Australia, via RNZ).

L2Who’s affected

The survivors are Wanis Weita, Wboy Weita, Akinis David, Paul Paul and Tedwin Paul; two are children. Local MP Kaotitaake Rakoroa said the pastor of the local Uniting Church took them in and "the group has already been treated by our medical officials on the island." He recommended they take the earliest flight to Kiritimati for more care. They have asked for privacy. Four companions remain unaccounted for.

L3Why it’s quiet

Analysis · OVERLOOKED The rescue happened on one of the most remote inhabited islands in the Pacific and was first reported by Pacific and Australian outlets.

L4Deeper impact

The U.S. Coast Guard in Micronesia, with U.S. Navy and Air Force aircraft, searched 25,000 nautical miles and suspended the search on Aug. 9 after 10 days (ABC). Chuuk Governor Alexander Narruhn: "There were nine people aboard the boat that went missing. Thanks be to God for his love and mercy that five of the nine people have been found. We continue to pray for their four companions." He asked FSM's president to open diplomatic talks with Kiribati to bring the survivors home.

L5Full context

It is the latest of several rescues in Kiribati waters. Last week, 18-year-old Luka Rahan from Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, was rescued between Tarawa and Maiana after drifting for 41 days and more than 2,000 km; his cousin died. Last month, three other Bougainvilleans returned home after about 70 days at sea; they were found near Kiritimati (ABC).
