Depth

Dig five layers into this story — from what happened to the full picture.

L1What happened

NBC PNG reported on Oct. 23 that haze had been visible over Port Moresby for two weeks and that the National Weather Service had confirmed a link to bushfires in Indonesia. In mid-October Inape had told The National the haze could be associated with smoke from fires in Indonesia and in PNG, and that further analysis was needed to establish its origin (The National; PNG Sun). He now says 60-80% of the smoke from Indonesia's bushfires is drifting into PNG, based on satellite monitoring (ABC).

L2Who’s affected

Residents of Port Moresby and of West Sepik and Western provinces are affected (EMTV). Inape: "There's a lot of carbon monoxide and dangerous gasses which are harmful to health. So people who suffer from respiratory illnesses find it hard to breathe" (ABC). Young children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with asthma or heart and lung conditions are most vulnerable (The National; EMTV).

L3Why it’s quiet

Analysis · OVERLOOKED Regional haze coverage centres on Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore; PNG's exposure has appeared mainly in PNG outlets and a roughly five-minute ABC Pacific radio item. We did not find PNG coverage by the 13 major U.S. outlets.

L4Deeper impact

"Without air-quality measurements, it is not possible to determine whether the current haze contains harmful concentrations of smoke particles," Inape told The National. The weather service urged face masks outdoors and boiling drinking water, and asked people to avoid lighting unnecessary fires (NBC PNG); residents were also told to limit outdoor activity and keep windows and doors closed during heavy smoke (The National; EMTV).

L5Full context

El Niño is delaying PNG's wet season, raising concern the haze could last longer (ABC); "During El Niño conditions, prolonged dry weather can increase the likelihood of vegetation and forest fires in parts of Indonesia and PNG," Inape told The National.
