Depth

Dig five layers into this story — from what happened to the full picture.

L1What happened

Through Oct. 24, the ministry recorded 16,224 dengue cases among children 0–11, against 8,067 in all of 2025, and 23 child deaths, against 18 in 2024 and 16 in 2025 (RPP, citing the Minsa situation room on vector-borne diseases; La República).

L2Who’s affected

San Martín has seven child deaths, ages 3 to 11, most between January and July and one in late August (regional health directorate, via RPP). Piura has five; Ucayali three; Lambayeque and Madre de Dios two each; and Amazonas, Junín, La Libertad and Loreto one each. Children account for 25% of all dengue deaths in Peru this year (RPP).

L3Why it’s quiet

Analysis · OVERLOOKED The figures come from a ministry data dashboard analysed by a Peruvian newsroom, not from an official announcement. We did not find coverage by the 13 major U.S. outlets.

L4Deeper impact

San Martín health spokesperson Erick Estrada said patients who died had arrived with warning signs and a history of self-medication, "casi el común denominador en el 70% de los fallecimientos que tenemos a nivel regional" (almost the common denominator in 70% of the region's deaths), often after buying pills at pharmacies or going to private clinics (RPP). Specialists also cite delays in seeking care (La República).

L5Full context

Serotype 3 has been detected more often since 2025 and is in almost every region this year, said César Munayco, director of the Health Ministry's epidemiology centre; the population lacks immunity to it (RPP; La República). In Piura, 99% of typed cases are serotype 3, said Julio Barrena of the regional medical college (RPP). Munayco expects cases to rise somewhat in coming months amid El Niño conditions (RPP).
