Effective November 5, 2026. Operated by Depth Media. Contact: support@theoverlooked.news.
This page describes only what this site’s code actually does. OVERLOOKED is published at theoverlooked.news, theoverlookednews.com and theoverlookednews.net. The sites are hosted on Railway.
What we collect
- Page traffic (first-party, no cookies). A small script sends the hostname, page path and referring site to our own
/aendpoint. We do not set cookies for this. We store the time, path, referrer hostname (if any), whether the device looks mobile, a country code when the host provides one (Cloudflarecf-ipcountry), and a daily-rotating one-way hash built from the date, network address and browser details — not the address itself. Bots and automated tools are filtered out. Admin, control and tip pages are not counted. - Email alerts. If you sign up at /alerts, we keep your email address, the alert choices you pick (roundup, breaking, PDF edition, topics, times, time zone) and confirmation status. Sign-up is double opt-in: nothing is sent until you confirm from your inbox. We do not store your IP with the subscription record, and our emails do not use tracking pixels or click tracking. Every email includes a manage link and one-click unsubscribe.
- Browser notifications. If you turn on push notifications, your browser gives us an anonymous push endpoint and keys, plus the notification choices and time zone you set. No email is required. You can turn them off here or in the browser.
- Contact form. Messages sent from /contact store the time, kind (tip, correction, partnership or other), optional name, email and message so we can reply.
- Anonymous tips. Tips at /tips keep what you type, optional files and any contact method you choose to give, plus case status and replies. Times are stored rounded to the hour. Passphrases are stored only as a one-way hash. Tips do not store IP address, browser details or cookies, and tip text is not written to ordinary server logs. Tip pages load no analytics, assistant, share buttons or outside fonts.
- Help assistant. Questions to the on-site assistant are answered from this site’s own content. When AI answers are switched on, the question text is sent to the configured AI provider to generate a reply. We log only metadata (time, answer mode, question length and which site pages were retrieved) — not the question text and not your IP.
- Search and filters. Search and news filters are handled as ordinary page requests (query in the URL). We do not keep a separate search log beyond the page-traffic and hosting logs described here.
- Rate limits. Some forms briefly count recent requests in memory by network address to slow abuse. Those counts are not written to disk and clear on their own.
What stays on your device
- Weather. The weather tool talks directly from your browser to Open-Meteo (forecast and place search) and, for U.S. ZIP codes, Zippopotam.us. Your chosen place and unit preference are saved in your browser’s local storage only.
- Translate. Choosing a language sends you to Google’s translate.goog proxy of this page. That is Google’s service; the English original on our domains is the version of record.
- Fonts. Pages load Inter and Source Serif 4 from Google Fonts.
- Share buttons. Share links open X, Facebook or LinkedIn only when you click them. Copy-link uses your device clipboard.
- Control panel. The private
/controlarea (operators only) uses an HttpOnly session cookie after sign-in. Ordinary readers never receive it.
Hosting and logs
The app runs on Railway. Runtime data (subscribers, messages, pageviews, push subscriptions, tip records and similar) is kept in Railway Postgres and an object-storage bucket used by this project. Like most hosts, Railway may keep short-lived access logs that can include IP addresses and request URLs for security and operations.
What we don’t do
We do not sell reader data. We do not use third-party ad trackers or social pixels on this site. We do not set analytics cookies. Sponsors have no access to individual reader records.
Your choices
Unsubscribe or change alert choices from any email’s manage link, or email support@theoverlooked.news. Turn off notifications in the alerts page or your browser. Clear local weather preferences in your browser settings. To ask about contact messages, tips or other stored data, email the same address.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update this page and the effective date above.
