L1What happened
On Oct. 26 the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples sent federal police a complaint from a Sassoró representative about WhatsApp audio in which people allegedly linked to the Tacuru municipality discussed putting toxic substances in the village's water; the ministry said there is no proof the water was contaminated (g1). The ministers arrived in the state on Oct. 31 (CNN Brasil), and 145 Força Nacional agents were assigned to Sassoró, Taquaperi and Limão Verde (O Globo). The house of a spiritual leader was set on fire in Aldeia Jaguapiré, Tacuru, the previous week (TV Brasil).
L2Who’s affected
Guarani Kaiowá villages in southern Mato Grosso do Sul are affected. Cacique and town councilor Ivan Montiel: "não vamos aceitar este tipo de preconceito contra nossa comunidade, ameaçando colocar veneno em água" (we will not accept this kind of prejudice against our community, threatening to put poison in the water) and "nós povos indígenas temos o direito, como qualquer cidadão, de escolher quem vamos votar" (we Indigenous peoples have the right, like any citizen, to choose who we vote for) (g1).

Minister Eloy Terena said the ministry received 10 cases after filtering, and that deaths on roads "não serão descartados" (will not be ruled out). Two Tacuru employees were removed, federal police have heard two suspects, and water-quality monitoring will be stepped up (O Globo). Tacuru Mayor Rogério Torquetti called the audio "um mal-entendido" (a misunderstanding) and apologized, saying people spoke "por conta de talvez um pouco de álcool" (perhaps because of a little alcohol) (g1). The state security department, Sejusp-MS: "não procede a afirmação de ocorrência de genocídio de povos indígenas no Estado" (the claim of genocide of Indigenous peoples in the state is unfounded) (g1).
L5Full context
APIB reported killings, people run over and suspected water poisoning in towns including Naviraí, Coronel Sapucaia, Tacuru and Nioaque; Sejusp-MS and federal police had not confirmed any deaths linked to political violence as of g1's report. An unnamed Indigenous man died after being hit on the MS-289 on Oct. 24, circumstances unknown (g1). An APIB survey obtained by O Globo counted 40 cases of political violence against Indigenous people across Brazil from July to October 2026, including seven killings, 35 cases of racism and 11 death threats (O Globo).
