Depth

Dig five layers into this story — from what happened to the full picture.

L1What happened

(An 11-year-old child drowned; several dozen houses collapsed.) The ministry's later toll is three dead (Radio Ndeke Luka, Nov. 4).

L2Who’s affected

Who is affected: Figures differ by source and area. Radio Ndeke Luka's Nov. 4 headline says "plus de deux mille personnes affectées" (more than two thousand people affected), while its text quotes the ministry as saying more than two thousand are "sans abri" (homeless). Journal de Bangui's headline: "plus de 1 800 personnes sinistrées" (more than 1,800 people affected), in the 5th arrondissement. "À Kaya, dans le 5ᵉ arrondissement, plus de 107 maisons se seraient écroulées" (more than 107 houses reportedly collapsed in Kaya) (Journal de Bangui).

L3Why it’s quiet

Why it is quiet: Our headline check of 13 major U.S. outlets found none covering it (O-Score 10, provisional); see the O-Score proof page.

L4Deeper impact

Deeper impact: A resident told Radio Ndeke Luka: "On a réparé les routes, mais il n'y a pas de caniveaux d'évacuation." (They repaired the roads, but there are no drainage gutters.) "Selon le service météorologique, des nouvelles pluies sont encore attendues." (More rain is expected, according to the weather service.) (Radio Ndeke Luka, Oct. 26)

L5Full context

Full context: Citing Radio Lengo Songo, Journal de Bangui reports "le député Yannick Davy Andjida a recensé plus d'une centaine de maisons détruites dans sa circonscription" (MP Yannick Davy Andjida counted more than a hundred houses destroyed in his constituency) and planned to ask the humanitarian ministry for help. Sources: Radio Ndeke Luka (two reports) and Journal de Bangui.
