Depth

Dig five layers into this story — from what happened to the full picture.

L1What happened

What happened: "Supervisor of Elections Alina Garcia's Office reported at 12:50 p.m. Tuesday that 242,933 Democrats had cast early, mail-in and Election Day ballots — outpacing both Republicans (231,521) and third- and no-party voters (186,879)" (Florida Politics, Jesse Scheckner). Those are ballots cast by registered party, not votes for any candidate, and they are unofficial. By our own arithmetic, not any outlet's, 242,933 minus 231,521 is 11,412 more ballots from registered Democrats at 12:50 p.m.

L2Who’s affected

Later figures: "Thirty minutes later, by which time 50.8% of the county's registered voters had cast ballots, the percentages had shifted to 36.4% Democrats, 35.2% Republicans and 28.4% third- and no-party voters" (Florida Politics). In the update stamped 2026-11-03 14:52:06 (2:52 p.m. ET), turnout was 243,928 Republican, 254,815 Democratic, 195,910 other and 694,653 total (the Miami-Dade Supervisor of Elections, via FreshTake.Vote). By our own arithmetic, 254,815 minus 243,928 is 10,887. The two sets of figures differ because they come from different times: 12:50 p.m. (Florida Politics) and 2:52 p.m. ET (FreshTake.Vote).

L3Why it’s quiet

Election Day in person: In the 2:52 p.m. ET update, ballots cast on Election Day itself were 51,832 Republican, 48,162 Democratic and 46,167 other (146,161 total) (the Miami-Dade Supervisor of Elections, via FreshTake.Vote). Florida Politics says the shares "will change as the day progresses, likely shifting toward the GOP, whose members have historically shown a higher propensity to vote in person on Election Day than Democrats."

L4Deeper impact

Why it matters: In 2024, "Trump outpaced then-Vice President Kamala Harris by 11.4 points — the first time the county sided with a Republican presidential candidate since 1988" (Florida Politics). "As of Oct. 1, Republicans held a 45,556-voter advantage over Democrats" in registration (Florida Politics). Florida Politics writes that "Miami-Dade County may be on track for a blue shift, voter turnout figures show." Analysis: Ballots cast by registered party are not votes for a candidate, and neither source reports results.

L5Full context

What to watch: FreshTake.Vote's mail-ballot table, credited to the Florida Division of Elections and last updated 2026-11-03 14:45:06, lists 58,753 mail ballots outstanding: 16,396 Republican, 23,526 Democratic and 18,831 other. "The polls are open until 7 p.m.; anyone in line then can still vote" (Florida Politics). Overlooked will update the figures as the counts change.
