Provisional: Google News (5 term variants for AP, Reuters and The Washington Post; 3 for the others) and Bing News (5 variants, outlet domain only) were both used. AP, Reuters and CBS News block direct site search, and the other 10 outlets’ site search only loads in a live browser. A single search engine can miss articles, so this score may go down on recheck. Some matches were confirmed from headline, date and URL because the outlet blocked us from opening them.
Depth
Dig five layers into this story — from what happened to the full picture.
L1What happened
The collision happened at about 8:11 a.m. local time, according to Solukhumbu district police and Tribhuvan International Airport via OnlineKhabar (CAAN's statement gave 8:12; the Koshi Province police release says 8:10). The Fishtail Air helicopter (9N-AJR) had flown from Gorakshep and the Air Dynasty helicopter (9N-AOD) from Lukla. The Kathmandu Post reports that the Air Dynasty helicopter's rotor blades struck the passenger windows of the Fishtail aircraft while both were still 2 to 3 metres above the ground, and that a widely shared video shows the Fishtail helicopter descending rapidly despite warnings from ground staff. The Post puts the helipad at about 4,371 metres; Al Jazeera, which credits AP and Reuters, says 4,200 metres.
L2Who’s affected
Balaramudu, travelling on the Fishtail helicopter, died at the scene. CAAN and Nepal Police use the spelling Balaramudu; police quoted in a separate Kathmandu Post story and by Hindustan Times spell it Balaramaramadu. The injured passenger, named Shailesh Krishna Patel by the Kathmandu Post, Hindustan Times and Anadolu (police give Selish Kumar Patel, 49), and the Fishtail pilot were flown to Mediciti Hospital. Nepal Police name that pilot Rabindra Prajapati; CAAN, via the Kathmandu Post, gives Rabindra Pradhan. Air Dynasty pilot Prajwal KC was treated at Nicole Niquille Hospital in Lukla and discharged, Nepal Police said. Police told Hindustan Times the body is at Lukla and will be handed to Indian authorities in Kathmandu.
L3Why it’s quiet
Analysis · OVERLOOKED The collision is covered mainly by Nepali and Indian outlets. In the U.S. it has appeared as a short AP wire story, carried by The Washington Post and ABC News.
L4Deeper impact
"Preliminary reports suggest miscommunication between the pilots, as the area is outside the coverage of Lukla Airport's air traffic control tower and pilots have to communicate with each other," CAAN director general Mukesh Dangol told the Kathmandu Post, adding that officials were recording the injured pilot's statement. Solukhumbu's chief development officer, Kaman Singh Thapa Magar, told Hindustan Times the weather was clear and "it appears there was some technical glitch"; police spokesperson Abi Narayan Kafle said an investigation is under way.
L5Full context
The Kathmandu Post says the collision raises fresh concerns over flight safety and the growing number of helicopter operations in the Everest region. It recalls a July 2023 Manang Air crash at Lamajura, Solukhumbu, that killed five Mexican tourists and pilot Chet Bahadur Gurung, and notes that on Dec. 12, 2025, the local municipality and Sagarmatha National Park issued directives restricting sightseeing helicopter flights over the park from Jan. 1, 2026, with rescues exempt. With no roads in the area, helicopters are the main way to evacuate sick or exhausted trekkers and guides (Al Jazeera).
