L1What happened

"An uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) organiser has been shot dead at his home in Umzumbe on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast," SABC News reported; Lastborn Shazi "was reportedly shot and killed on Monday night" (SABC). KZN police spokesperson Col. Robert Netshiunda said the 45-year-old was allegedly shot and killed at his home in Mathulini in the Mthwalume Local Municipality, and that "the deceased was found lying in a pool of blood with gunshot wounds" (The Witness). Police say "the suspects were unknown at this stage and the motive of the killing formed part of police investigations" (The Witness).

L2Who’s affected

Netshiunda said Shazi "was a regional organiser of a political party in the Ugu District and was also a PR Councillor candidate" (The Witness). He was shot "while attending a virtual meeting to prepare for the local government elections," and the party "received news of the shooting shortly after 9 pm on Monday," IOL reported. In KwaZulu-Natal, "out of 331 high-risk voting stations nationally, the province accounted for 165," according to Mail & Guardian.

L3Why it’s quiet

Analysis · OVERLOOKED Local-election violence in South Africa rarely reaches U.S. outlets, and this came on U.S. Election Day; of the 13 major outlets we track, only Reuters had reported the killing by Tuesday morning ET.

L4Deeper impact

On Sunday, Lt-Gen Tebello Mosikili, the police deputy national commissioner for policing, "said 20 murders linked to political activities had been recorded before the key elections," and "Gauteng tops the number of killings and KZN occupies the second spot" (Mail & Guardian). "Over the weekend, Ntombi Mkhize, an ActionSA activist and councillor candidate under Maphumulo local municipality, was stabbed and strangled" (Mail & Guardian). ANC councillor Lungani Makhathini and activist Nokuthula Mavundla were shot dead while campaigning door to door in Umgababa, south of Durban, on Oct. 15 (The Witness; Mail & Guardian).

L5Full context

The MK Party "has called for the Political Killings Task Team to immediately investigate what appears to have been a planned assassination of Lastborn Shazi," Mail & Guardian reported; the "assassination" description is the party's and M&G's, not the police's. MK Party provincial spokesperson Mkhuseli Mlengane said there were currently no leads: "We don’t want any speculation around his murder, what we want is an official and thorough investigation by the PKTT" (The Witness). Special voting "takes place on Monday and Tuesday, ahead of Wednesday’s 2026 local government elections," and "29.2 million registered voters are expected to participate," IOL reported.
