Depth

Dig five layers into this story — from what happened to the full picture.

L1What happened

The county election board voted at meetings in June and August to permanently close the only polling locations for Summerton 2, Sardinia-Gable, Panola, Paxville and Manning 1, the ACLU of South Carolina's letter says. The ACLU asked the State Election Commission to intervene and restore them; the commission told WIS: "At this time, the State Election Commission does not intend to take further action with regards to that matter" (WIS).

L2Who’s affected

According to the letter, around 10% of Clarendon County’s eligible voters will need to travel outside their precinct to cast a ballot, and Black voters are "twice as likely as white voters to be affected" (WIS). Local Democrats count six sites closed or merged in all, leaving eight precincts voting at just four locations, HERE Columbia reports.

L3Why it’s quiet

L4Deeper impact

"Voters in Clarendon County are entitled to at least one voting location per precinct and are entitled to vote inside their precinct," the letter says. It was signed by Allen Chaney and Sarah Schreiber (WIS). HERE Columbia reports that the commission's reply, signed by Executive Director Conway Belangia, listed common reasons polling places move, such as a building that is no longer available or a shortage of poll workers, and referred specific questions back to the county board.

L5Full context

The dispute comes during turnover at the county election office: HERE Columbia reports the board voted 7-1 to fire director Robert Adams, and that its newly named director is the third person in the job in a little more than a year. Voters unsure of their polling place can check their registration through the State Election Commission (HERE Columbia).
