Depth

Dig five layers into this story — from what happened to the full picture.

L1What happened

SGC recorded the quake at 4:13 a.m. local time at a depth of less than 30 kilometers, centered in Chaparral in southern Tolima; it was also strongly felt in Roncesvalles and San Antonio (El Tiempo; Infobae). The USGS lists it as magnitude 5.4, 24 km NNW of Rioblanco (USGS). SGC's Geohazards technical director, Carolina García Londoño, said five aftershocks of magnitude 2.1 to 3.5 had been detected by 5:45 a.m. (Infobae). El Tiempo's live blog led with an SGC update on a 3.3 aftershock and separately listed one of 3.5 (El Tiempo).

L2Who’s affected

UNGRD's preliminary report: one person injured in Chaparral when a wall fell inside a home; part of a church on Carrera Quinta in Quimbaya, Quindío, came loose with no injuries; and some residential complexes in Bogotá were evacuated (Infobae). The mayor, spelled Elver González Mora by Infobae and Helver González by Noticias Caracol, said several homes were damaged and one or more destroyed. He said two women were brought by ambulance to the hospital after an incident in the Cañón de Las Hermosas area (Noticias Caracol; Infobae). Chaparral's municipal risk coordinator, Xavier Gutiérrez, reported a wall collapse in the Divino Niño neighborhood affecting two elderly people. He also reported damage to homes in the rural areas of Río Negro, Argentina and Yaguara and to shops in the town center (Caracol Radio).

L3Why it’s quiet

Analysis · OVERLOOKED The Reuters wire, last updated at 6:29 a.m. EST, said the quake caused no victims or material damage (Reuters); that line predates the local damage reports above. No deaths, a moderate magnitude and Spanish-only detail kept it out of U.S. news; see the O-Score receipts.

L4Deeper impact

"Este enjambre ha sido muy fuerte, el anterior fue de 4,3 y este ya es de 5,6. Realmente, las comunidades tienen mucho miedo" ("This swarm has been very strong. The last one was 4.3 and this one is 5.6. The communities are really afraid"), the mayor said. He asked the national government for support and suspended school classes (Noticias Caracol). Chaparral has had about 1,100 tremors since Sept. 20, according to local authorities cited by Noticias Caracol; the mayor put it at more than 1,100 (Noticias Caracol). SGC received more than 3,800 citizen reports: more than 1,000 from Bogotá, 940 from Valle del Cauca and 460 from Tolima (Infobae).

L5Full context

SGC says Tolima is crossed by active geological faults (Infobae). Reuters recalled that a magnitude 7.4 earthquake in August killed 335 people and injured more than 4,500 in southwestern and central Colombia (Reuters). Chaparral is in the same southern Tolima region as Planadas, scene of the Nov. 1 bombing (see our story colombia-planadas-tolima-truck-bomb-baby-killed); no one has linked the quake to the conflict.
