L4Deeper impact

Hours after the group left Gangotri on Oct. 27, authorities received a weather alert warning of adverse conditions on Oct. 29, but officials were unable to contact the group, Mayank Garg, Deputy Director of Gangotri National Park, told The Indian Express. Avalanches occurred at around 10-12 locations along the route, hampering rescue (The Indian Express). "This is the fifth year they visited Uttarakhand. They love the mountains," Rintu's brother Sintu Mondol said (The Indian Express).

L5Full context

Kedartal is a glacial lake at 15,485 feet (4,720 metres), reached by an 18-kilometre trek from Gangotri (Hindustan Times). The party set out Oct. 27 and was expected back by Oct. 29. Hindustan Times and The Indian Express describe a 12-member party: seven trekkers, a guide, a cook and three porters. ETV Bharat reports 13 members, seven trekkers and six support staff, and says one cook returned to Gangotri the next day.
