Depth

Dig five layers into this story — from what happened to the full picture.

L1What happened

BNPB says floods, landslides and a breached levee hit parts of Lumajang regency in East Java after high-intensity rain since the night of Nov. 1-2. The number of affected families rose to 1,567, from 1,417 a day earlier, and counting is still under way (ANTARA, Nov. 3). A Semeru rain-lahar flood broke the Glidik River levee (ANTARA photo caption citing BPBD Lumajang). BNPB also confirmed the two deaths, a father and child, in an earlier landslide: "Ada dua jiwa yang meninggal ... mereka ini adalah bapak dan anak" ("Two people died ... they are a father and child").

L2Who’s affected

The disaster hit three districts, Pasirian, Jatiroto and Tempursari, covering eight villages; 1,417 homes were affected, and roads, power lines and farmland were disrupted, said BNPB's acting data and communications chief Berton Panjaitan (ANTARA). The Glidik levee breach damaged three homes, left 10 more at risk of collapse and isolated 117 families in Dusun Taman Sari (ANTARA, citing BPBD Lumajang).

L4Deeper impact

Crews reopened the Tamansari-Iburaja road blocked by a landslide, and BNPB asked local officials to monitor river levels, overflow bridges, levees and power-network damage for follow-on disasters (ANTARA, Nov. 3).

L5Full context

At about 2:10 a.m. on Oct. 31, a landslide hit the home of Imron Rosadi, 40, in Tamanayu village, Pronojiwo district, killing him and his child Hilya, 9.
