Depth
Dig five layers into this story — from what happened to the full picture.
L1What happened
What happened: SINGLE-SOURCE on the repayment claim (OnlineKhabar only): Narnath Neupane, secretary of Rasuwagadhi Hydropower Company, told OnlineKhabar the company "had paid bank interest up to the end of the last fiscal year but was unlikely to be able to repay the principal". Neupane also said it had been unable to pay its instalment to the Employees Provident Fund in Ashoj (OnlineKhabar's English spelling; Nepali original uses असोज). OnlineKhabar attributes these principal and Ashoj instalment claims to Neupane and the company.
L2Who’s affected
Who is affected: OnlineKhabar: "Seven projects owned by the Nepal Electricity Authority and its subsidiaries, and seven operated by private companies, were affected", plus lenders and shareholders. The company is studying "whether the project could generate sufficient returns for shareholders."
L3Why it’s quiet
Why it is quiet: Our headline check of 13 major U.S. outlets: see the O-Score proof page. A post-disaster financing story reported by Nepali outlets (our analysis).
L4Deeper impact
Deeper impact: IPPAN secretary Bijay Mohan Bhattarai told OnlineKhabar: "It is not feasible to rebuild projects in the same condition after they took 25 to 30 years to develop." He estimated projects that were already operating "could take another two years to rebuild," and said: "Insurance money alone will not be sufficient."
L5Full context
Full context: Ministry spokesperson Mohan Kumar Shakya said damage details went to the National Planning Commission for a Post-Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA), and: "Discussions are under way on how reconstruction should proceed, but no specific approach has been finalised" (OnlineKhabar, Nov. 4). Banking Sansar (Oct. 8): "The underground powerhouse has been filled with mud". OnlineKhabar (Sept. 30) put the 14 projects at "around 783 MW."
