Depth

Dig five layers into this story — from what happened to the full picture.

L1What happened

The Zapatista assembly ACGAZ says that on Oct. 30, Audoamaro Oropeza Camacho again put 70 head of cattle on reclaimed land at the property formerly called Valencia (official municipality of Ocosingo) and at the Linda Vista property (official municipality of Salto de Agua), Frayba reported in its Bulletin No. 18 of Oct. 31. Frayba says this comes as works on the San Cristóbal de Las Casas-Palenque highway advance nearby.

L2Who’s affected

Frayba says the affected people are Zapatista support-base (BAEZLN) communities and families living on territories reclaimed by the EZLN in the Selva Norte region of Chiapas. ACGAZ has warned at least three times, according to the bulletin.

L3Why it’s quiet

Analysis · OVERLOOKED The complaint comes from a regional rights group's bulletin; coverage we found is limited to Mexican outlets and solidarity groups.

L4Deeper impact

ACGAZ: "Es la TERCERA VEZ que les avisamos, es una PROVOCACIÓN" ("This is the THIRD TIME we are warning you, it is a PROVOCATION"), and says the works "van a destrozar 300 metros de largo por 80 metros de ancho en un predio" (will destroy 300 meters long by 80 meters wide on one property) (Frayba). Frayba says: "La omisión del Estado mexicano frente a las agresiones contra territorios zapatistas profundiza el riesgo de una escalada de violencia" ("The Mexican state's inaction in the face of aggression against Zapatista territories deepens the risk of an escalation of violence").

L5Full context

The highway is officially known as the Ruta de las Culturas Mayas (Frayba). Frayba calls on President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo and Chiapas Gov. Eduardo Ramírez Aguilar to act immediately, and Infobae reports the demands include "Suspensión de intervenciones del proyecto carretero en territorios recuperados" (suspension of road-project work in recovered territories). The ACGAZ statement says the aggression will not stop a planned initiative to meet relatives of disappeared people (Frayba). OVERLOOKED has not seen a response from the federal or Chiapas governments or from Oropeza Camacho in these reports.
