Depth

Dig five layers into this story — from what happened to the full picture.

L1What happened

The soldiers were in Tactical Divers Course No. 64, on a 2,500-meter night swim near the pier of the old Anglo meatpacking plant (Cadena del Mar; El Observador). All were tied to the same "cuerda madre" (mother rope), with instructors in two boats and two kayaks; the object they got tangled on has not been identified (El Observador).

L2Who’s affected

The dead are Alférez Matías Vasella, 23, of Mechanized Infantry Battalion No. 6; Cabo de 1.ª Carlos Leandro Gómez, 29, of Armored Cavalry Regiment No. 2; and Cabo de 1.ª Juan Rocha, 24, of Mechanized Infantry Battalion No. 2. The survivor, 2nd Lt. Braian Ruiz, was resuscitated and is in the Hospital Militar in Montevideo, where Cadena del Mar says he is improving. Río Negro intendant Guillermo Levratto declared 48 hours of departmental mourning (Cadena del Mar; El Observador).

L3Why it’s quiet

Analysis · OVERLOOKED Reporting came from Uruguayan Spanish-language media and the government; see the O-Score receipts for the U.S. check.

L4Deeper impact

Prosecutors have provisionally classified the case as a "siniestro marítimo" (maritime accident) and, with the Prefectura, are investigating whether there was culpable criminal responsibility (Montevideo Portal). The Defense Ministry said it will examine how the exercise was planned and authorized, its safety conditions and the emergency response (El Observador).

L5Full context

Army commander Mario Stevenazzi received the report of the urgent internal investigation, which goes to Defense Minister Sandra Lazo (Montevideo Portal). "Todo un país lamenta la pérdida de estos jóvenes compatriotas" ("A whole country mourns the loss of these young compatriots"), Orsi said (Cadena del Mar).
